A Four Mile Stretch of Douglas Avenue was closed in areas including College Hill and downtown Wichita. It was opened up to bikers walkers and even skaters as part of a larger effort to promote physical health. Unlike past Year's this year's event included a multicultural celebration featuring performers from different cultural backgrounds a stage with dancers and singers all from different backgrounds.
Margarita Lafarelle Hunt: “I don't like excluding anybody.” Margarita Laferelle Hunt is the president of the Multicultural Education and Celebration Association. The Multicultural Fashion Show and Fundraiser showcased the city's history, taking guests on a journey through time from the 1850s to the present day. On May 18, 2019, the Sedgwick County Extension Center served as a backdrop for this captivating evening, where each outfit told a unique story about the community's past and present.
“The event was meant to bring home the fact that people of various ethnic backgrounds have been around for decades in Wichita and helped it develop,” shared organizer Margarita LaFarelle-Hunt. This sentiment set the tone for the evening, reminding everyone of the deep cultural roots which have shaped Wichita into the vibrant city it is today.
Performances played a significant role in illustrating the variety of cultures represented. The sacred rhythms of Native American drummers honored Wichita's original inhabitants, while cowboys and saloon girl dancers from the Old Cowtown Museum paid homage to the city’s pioneering days. Each act served as a vivid reminder of the contributions made by different communities throughout history.
The program included notable performances, such as a Chinese cultural dance and lively music from a mariachi band, celebrating the Chinese and Mexican immigrants who played pivotal roles in the development of the region. Each of these acts enriched the overall experience, revealing the interconnectedness of Wichita's various cultural narratives.
The audience was also treated to a display of iconic fashion styles across the decades. From flapper dresses encapsulating the spirit of the roaring 20s to poodle skirts and bell bottoms representing the spirited 60s, the runway was alive with stories.
Rosie the Riveter made a special appearance, symbolizing the women who stepped up to work in the aircraft industry during World War II. A poignant reminder of women's essential contributions to society.
During an interview with the Wichita Eagle, Margarita expressed her aspirations for the show: “We want to give people a better understanding of our diverse cultures and show that it didn’t happen just now or recently but from the very beginning.” The tagline, “We are America’s Strength,” highlighted the long-standing presence of diverse cultures in shaping Wichita's identity.
The event also had a significant philanthropic component. It served as a fundraiser for several organizations committed to providing vital resources and education to residents of Wichita. These initiatives included health and medical assistance, cultural education, and job training for formerly incarcerated women. The collective efforts of these organizations made a tangible impact on the community.
Participating organizations included New Life Reentry, La Familia Senior Community Center, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Amira Dance Productions, and the Sedgwick County Extension Center. Each organization brought its unique contribution to the event, helping to foster a spirit of collaboration and community support.
A silent auction complemented the night, allowing guests to bid on various items while contributing to the fundraising efforts. In addition to monetary support, attendees were encouraged to bring items for relief efforts aimed at aiding victims of the Puerto Rico hurricane and Nebraska flooding. This initiative highlighted a strong sense of community spirit and willingness to assist those in need.
Guests were encouraged to donate essential supplies like trash bags, gloves for cleanup, and items such as diapers for adults and children and pet food. “This is about more than just a show,” Margarita stated, emphasizing the importance of collective support during challenging times.
This event served as a powerful reminder of the strength that diversity brings to our community. The stories told through fashion and performance underscored the significant cultural contributions which have shaped Wichita's history.
The Multicultural Fashion Show was not just a celebration of the past. It also aimed to foster a sense of hope for the future. Each voice and every outfit represented a piece of the vibrant mosaic which is Wichita, reminding us all of the importance of community.
As the evening came to a close, attendees felt a renewed sense of unity and pride. “We are all part of this story,” Margarita concluded, a statement which resonated deeply with those present.
